The second season of the "Next-Culture-Producer" project, "Active Architecture", jointly initiated by the PSA( the Power Station of Art,Shanghai) and the Chanel Cultural Foundation, was held at the PSA from July 15, 2023 to October 8, 2023. The selected scheme of this season, "The Way of Shadows", curated by architect Chen Donghua, focuses the "activity" of architecture on "shadow", a semi-natural, semi-artificial, semi-indoor collective space state in southern China, identifying and presenting a unique type of "shadow" places and buildings.
During the exhibition, Chen Donghua specially invited structural engineer Zhang Zhun(AND Office) to serve as a mentor, Guo Yimin and Pan Hui to serve as comment guests, and invited young architects and structural engineers to participate in a five-day workshop named 'SHADE AND SHED' to build three temporary "sheds" by hands.
Low-cost building materials such as fishing poles, sunshade nets, hollow bricks, etc. were used in hand-building and manual constructions.
